Profusions of goldenrod

adorn the road to Centennial Park.

Clouds circle the sun, a feathery swirl–

windy gusts hint of impending snow.

Hummingbirds abandon the backyard feeder—

and gnats haunt the evening cool.

We, like elk, hunker down and wait.
