Reckoning

Despite
          first fallen leaves,
          pumpkin-populated porches,
despite
          fresh-pressed  cider,
          Friday night football,
we thrive
          on borrowed warmth of
          golden delicious afternoons
savoring,
          stretching out summer
until
          delay is futile,
          deferral  defunct,
until
          the cold
                    SNAP!
